Nick Kyrgios was victorious in his US Open round of 16 clash against top seed and reigning champion Daniil Medvedev, winning the match by 3 sets to 1 (7-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2).
With the match at 1-1, and Kyrgios 1-0 up in the third set, Medvedev was serving at 30-30 in the second game.
Despite having a big opening to break Medvedev's serve, Nick Kyrgios produced one of the most braindead and bizarre shots you are likely to see at this level of tennis.
After hitting a powerful shot down the line to Medvedev, the Russian could only swipe at the ball and send it high into the air, and not far enough to clear the net.
Instead of leaving the ball and winning the point, Kyrgios decided to cross over the his opponent's side and play a smash shot. Of course, this is illegal and the Aussie lost the point.

Kyrgios was adamant that he thought the shot was legal, but we're not so sure. The Aussie is drawn to controversy, and pulling off such a shot on purpose would be in line with his previous behaviour.
"It was an amazing match. Daniil is the defending champion and a lot of pressure on his shoulders, but I've been playing great recently," said Kyrgios following the win.
"People were really starting to doubt my ability to pull out matches like this at majors. I'm really proud of myself because it hasn't been easy dealing with all the criticism."
"I just feel like I'm playing for a lot more than myself. I've got a lot of motivation in the back of my mind. I've been away from home now for four months. My whole team has. We don't get to see our family like other tennis players do the majority of time.
"I'm trying to make it worthwhile, trying to make it a memorable ride for all of us. Hopefully we can get it done, go back home and really celebrate."
