There is no denying that Nick Kyrgios has been the story of Wimbledon so far this year.

The Australian has long been a controversial character in tennis, although it seems many members of the public are now only becoming truly acquainted with him for the first time.

He has been in top form over the last ten days or so, both in terms of his play and antics on the court. There have been some moments of brilliance, as well as some incidents of absolute petulance involving umpires and members of the crowd. It is all part of the Nick Kyrgios experience.

Nick Kyrgios has testy exchange with reporter

The 27-year old would emerge victorious in his last-16 match over Brandon Nakashima yesterday, winning in five sets to book his place in the quarter-final. He was in good spirits when speaking after the contest.

However, not all were pleased with his appearance on centre court.

Wimbledon employs a strict all-white dress code, which even applies before and after matches. As a result, Nick Kyrgios was bending the rules by wearing a red baseball cap and a pair of red Jordans when conducting the interview.

It seemed a fairly inconsequential breach of an old fashioned rule, but that didn't stop one British reporter from criticising him afterwards.

When appearing in his post-match press conference, Kyrgios seemed bemused by a reporter trying to bait a headline out of him by questioning him about breaking the dress code.

Reporter: We all know the Wimbledon dress code rules are very strict, 'competitors must be dressed in suitable tennis attire that is almost entirely white and this applies from the point in which the player enters the court surround.

Kyrgios: Yep.

Reporter: Why then would you walk on centre court with bright red trainers on and do an interview in a red cap?

Kyrgios: Because I do what I want.

Reporter: So you're above the rules?

Kyrgios: No, I'm not above the rules.

Reporter: So what is it, they don't apply to you?

Kyrgios: Well, I just like wearing my Jordans.

Reporter: But there are rules specifically against that. I don't want to spoil the surprise, but the referees are going to be speaking to you about it.

Kyrgios: That's ok. I'll wear some triple whites tomorrow.

Reporter: So everyone else in both draws follows the rules, but Nick Kyrgios doesn't?

Kyrgios: But nobody else, even after Wimbledon, nobody else really walks with Jordans on the court.

Reporter: Nick has just moaned about the controversy that surrounds him?

Kyrgios: I haven't moaned. I love it.

Reporter: You've laughed it off, so that's all part of it you reckon?

Kyrgios: Well it's more attention for me. What's that saying? Any publicity is good publicity, right?

Reporter: If you say so.

Kyrgios: Keep doing you then champion.

Certain sections of the press and social media have been gunning for Nick Kyrgios over the last week or so, although you would hazard a guess that many members of the general public have enjoyed watching him play up to this point.
