YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS.
John McEnroe has a new book coming out entitled But Seriously. During the promotion of said book on Sunday, he was questioned about Serena Williams.
While he did praise her as the greatest female tennis player ever, he didn't rank her as the best ever.
Well because if she was in, if she played the men's circuit she'd be like 700 in the world.
I believe because she's so incredibly strong mentally that she could overcome some situations where players would choke 'cause she's been in it so many times, so many situations at Wimbledon, The U.S. Open, etc. But if she had to just play the circuit — the men's circuit — that would be an entirely different story.
A reminder that Williams won the Australian Open in January while she was eight weeks pregnant. It was her 23rd Grand Slam. Only one other player has won more in tennis history. The full interview with NPR is available here.
Serena responded to his comments via Twitter last night:
Dear John, I adore and respect you but please please keep me out of your statements that are not factually based.

I've never played anyone ranked "there" nor do I have time. Respect me and my privacy as I'm trying to have a baby. Good day sir

A dignified response from the 35-year old American. People were quick to back her up on social media.
Let John McEnroe win a major while he is literally creating new human life inside his evil body and then he can talk about Serena Williams. https://t.co/kRVjMYJee8

And as if to fire a warning shot to her competitors, Williams uploaded a video to her Instagram last week of her practicing. No mean feat: she's seven months pregnant.
