Donna Vekic's name was thrown into the spotlight when Nick Kyrgios' sledging of Stan Wawrinka in last week's Canadian Rogers Cup was caught by a microphone. This comes just days after the other person implicated by the taunt - Thanasi Kokkinakis also spoke out against Kyrgios' actions.
The 19-year-old tennis star is rumoured to be the girlfriend of Stan Wawrinka that Kyrgios was referring to in his taunt, and the Croatian has broken her silence on the matter saying it was "very disappointing" to hear Kyrgios use her private life as a way to taunt his opponent. Speaking to Canadian newspaper The Province, Vekic said:
It's not easy but I'm trying to focus on tennis and my next match.
I haven't spoken to Kyrgios. But it's a very disappointing thing to be happening in our sport and I hope it won't happen again because it's not a very good image for our sport.
The women's world no. 128th has had a dip since a peak of 62nd in July 2013, and has been linked romantically to both French Open champion Wawrinka, and Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Kyrgios has been fined by the ATP for the incident, and has received wide condemnation for his actions, garnering him the reputation as a "superbrat"
