The sun has long set on the careers of Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi, but retirement and various states of baldness clearly have not diluted the hatred that both men feel for each other
The pair renewed hostilities in a recent doubles match at Indian Wells where Sampras teamed with Roger Federer and Agassi (dressed like a pool cleaner) played with Rafael Nadal. Some genius decided to give everyone portable microphones and somewhere towards the end of the first set, a bitter slagging match breaks out between the two geriatrics.
First, Sampras, who is admittedly grating, does his best rendition of Agassi’s pigeon walk. Then Agassi, who’s head seems to glow when he’s angry, delivers a particularly cruel blow and reminds the world that Sampras doesn’t tip (an old and odd beef, it must be said). No man, especially a rich dude, can take accusations of being cheap lying down and so a bewildered Sampras blasts a serve right at Andre.
For their part, Federer and Nadal just seem a bit shocked by the level of the animus on display between the old-timers. Hopefully they were taking notes about how to conduct a real rivalry.
Enough crying, lads, more fighting.
