The Eastern Conference of World Team Tennis Championship featured something that we've certainly never seen before; a doubles tennis match that finished with three players. The Philadelphia Freedoms took on the Washington Kastles in the match with Taylor Townsend and Liezel Huber representing the Freedoms while Martina Hingis and Anastasia Rodionova flew the flag for the Kastles.
Unfortunately the Freedom's Huber was forced off through injury early which farcically forced her teammate Townsend to play the rest of the match all on her own, trying to cover both sides of the court with all those open lanes and reduced to watching rather sadly as serves bounced ten feet away from her.
She did try things, like move about a bit in an effort to completely throw the tag team off their game. It didn't work.
But she did win a few points, which frankly should have seen the match be awarded to her.
We should add that the reason Huber was forced off the court through injury was that Townsend smashed a ball into the back of her head and yes, it was that Martina Hingis, the one who once spent 209 weeks as World No:1 and has 5 Grand Slam titles that was one of her opponents.
Tough afternoon's work.
