After the first day of final action in tournament, the 29-year-old had already one hand on the prize - leading 12-5 - and he simply never loosened his grip on the coveted prize. With this evening's victory, he also becomes a triple-crown winner after a sensational season that also saw him claim both the UK Championship and the Masters.
Even in defeat, a magnanimous Higgins was able to recognise how impressive his opponent was saying, "I was the lucky one - I didn't have to pay for a ticket because, honestly, it was just awesome.

After a record-breaking final that saw him become the first man in history to earn over £1million in a season, Trump reflected on his achievements.
I can't put it into words - I've worked so hard for this.
It was an amazing final. I think the standard from the very first session, from the very first ball...John is such a great player. I always seem to raise my game and I still don't beat him. Every time I play him I play amazing and he beats me every time. It's probably the best I've ever played in a major final.
It's an incredible achievement for me from where I was at the start of the season.
