Simon Zebo has declared his love for hurling calling it the ‘best sport in the world.’ We are well used to seeing his talent on the rugby pitch, but he also has skills with a slíotar and camán.
Zebo is an ambassador for Bord Gáis’ #HurlingToTheCore campaign, where Bord Gáis are sponsoring the upcoming Senior Hurling Championship. This promotion sees familiar faces who aren't particularly associated with hurling discuss their love for the sport.
‘I think hurling is so unique as a sport probably because of the speed of it. The talent that is required to played it and skill level is par to no other. It’s hugely entertaining. And because of those three reasons, I think it’s the best sport in the world.’
In his younger days, he played with Blackrock GAA in Cork.
‘I started playing when I was five or six, I came up with my father, and I had some great years here. Being on this pitch bring back a lot of memories. I played a lot of games here, we won some championships and it’s great to be back.’
And though rugby won in the end, Zebo says hurling helped a lot with his skills in rugby.
‘Hurling helped a lot with my rugby game. It helped a lot with my hand-eye co-ordination. With the my fitness and my mental toughness. There’s a few skillful rugby players around who can thank GAA.’
