Zack Holmes was shown a red card 22 minutes into the Champions Cup quarter-final between his Toulouse side and Racing 92 on Sunday afternoon.
After Simon Zebo evaded a tackle and popped the ball out to Juan Imhoff, the Australian out-half hit the winger with a high tackle which referee Luke Pearce deemed to be a sending off offence.
"You've tackled him high," Pearce explained to Holmes before showing him the red card.
"There are not any mitigating factors and your shoulder has gone straight into his neck. That's a red card."
On commentary for BT Sport, the immediate reaction of Brian O' Driscoll and Lawrence Dallaglio was to suggest that it was a yellow card and nothing more. Though, the opinion of both had moved closer to agreeing that it was a red card by the time Holmes walked from the pitch.
