His last game was 2 months before he died. (IU Rugby's 50th: End of the World Tour) he was 63. He played all 3 - 20 minute 'quarters' (as they usually do in alumni games). Hands down one of the best players I've ever seen, ever, and I didn't really even start to watch him play until he was over 40.
At his memorial service this last Saturday some guys from the local team came up and told me a story about a game 5-6 years ago when he was playing scrum half.
The tight head prop on the opposing team kept cheating by pulling down his prop. He kindly informed (gross misrepresentation of 'kindly') the prop it was illegal and to stop. It happened again. He warned the prop again, stop. 4th or 5th time the Ref was occupied with something else on the field.
The prop reached up started to pull down my dad's prop. He tucked the ball under his arm and delivered a swift underhook to the props face, knocking him out and collapsing the scrum. Everyone on my dad's team (including the ones telling the story) looked at each other with "Did that 56 year old guy just drop that prop?"
When the prop finally got up, he never did it again the rest of that game.
