Ireland's world cup squad has already generated a lot of debate. Fans are distraught that Ulster's Andrew Trimble has been left out, while George Hook was quick to get in that he thinks Ireland don't have a hope of winning the tournament.

But former Ireland international and rugby journalist Tony Ward has bigger concerns over the risks that Schmidt has taken. He was already an outspoken opponent of only taking two scrumhalves before the squad was announced branding it "lunacy" and now that that worry has become a reality, Ward hasn't softened his stance.

Much of Ward's arguement centres around the lack of experience that Madigan has at the unfamiliar role of scrumhalf, and that three scrumhalves are the minimum requirement should anything happen to either of them.

Ward admits that he understands the rationale, but is afraid that the gamble will come back to bite Schmidt:

As a utility back, it is difficult enough covering positions in which you are less familiar, but regardless of how things have gone in training, being asked to play in a position totally alien to you is a huge ask.

Ward's biggest bone of contention with the squad isn't among the scrumhalves though. His concern is at loosehead, and he thinks that for once Schmidt has gone on instinct rather than his meticulous method.

Ward doesn't understand why there isn't more cover for the injury concern that is Cian Healy, and why Michael Bent's versatility wasn't employed.

I don't get the thinking with the props, not unless he is sure that one of his back-up tightheads, Nathan White or Tadhg Furlong - two rookies at this level - can fill in at loosehead should the need arise.

Schmidt is something of a contradiction: he's a stickler for detail, yet at critical times is willing to go with instinct.

Ward makes some valid arguments, as it would have appeared easier to cover an injury risk, especially at a specialised position of loosehead prop.

Ward has major concerns about these calls, what about you?
