The intriguing story of the Australian rugby league player urinating into his own mouth has certainly piqued the interest of many since it first raised its head. Mostly it's intriguing for the fact that we all want to know why anyone would choose to do it.
Well the player in question, Todd Carney, has come out and answered that question. It was all a prank that he didn't even know was being recorded. Not only that, he also revealed that it's not the first time he's done it. Doing the deed in the first place is bad enough but why admit to having done it before?
Carney spoke to Australia's Nine Network on Monday after it had been confirmed that he had been sacked by his club Cronulla Sharks.
It's something I didn't know was out there and would surface like this. It was just a prank, the boys have seen me doing it before. I didn't know it had been taken and I didn't think it would become public. I didn't do it for a picture to be taken, I didn't do it to let anyone down.
Much as it's hurt Cronulla, it's hurt my pride and my dignity as a person and my mum and my sisters.
Carney also spoke about the conversation he had with Cronulla chief executive Steve Noyce after the picture became public. A conversation which ended in his sacking.
He asked me what I thought should happen. I just said I wanted the opportunity to talk to the players then talk to the board and the staff. 10 minutes later the boys got in touch to let me know it had happened. I felt betrayed and lied to.
Ah yes, playing the victim, that's the way to go with that.
