Sunday Times Writer Stephen Jones has weighed in on the fall-out from World Rugby's report into the most suitable nation to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Last week, Irish media raised several issues with the bidding process, while the IRFU sent a letter to World Rugby questioning the decision.

Predictably, Jones has come down on the side of World Rugby criticising the "bile and bitterness" from France and Ireland in response to the decision.

the almost violent reaction of France and especially Ireland has caused anger behind the scenes and the latest shock is that, under pressure from the Irish government, the UK government has contacted at least two of the three home nations who have votes to discuss their likely intentions.

Jones, writing in his column today, claims next week's vote is merely a formality for the council members, who in going with the recommendation would be "validating the process."

England are expected to use their three votes in support of Ireland, but Jones says this decision is causing internal turmoil and that there is lasting bitterness with Ireland's reaction.

Bill Beaumont, World Rugby’s chamirman and the former chairman of the RFU, is said to be “disturbed and disappointed” by the reactions of France and Ireland, and World Rugby as a whole feel that the reactions have been against the letter and spirit of the whole process.

Ireland caused astonishment last week when their chief executive attacked stadiums in South Africa even though they are on a different level to those offered by Ireland.

Jones claims are contrary to Beaumont's statement yesterday, who said he welcomed Ireland's communication:

Following the publication of the Rugby World Cup 2023 recommendation and evaluation report, I would like to thank the host candidates for their feedback.

In order for council to have appropriate time to consider all the materials, the window for dialogue is now closed.

We now look forward to council making its decision in London on November 15.

Whatever the conclusion, at least Wednesday's vote will bring some welcome respite to the back-and-forth between the various organisations.
