Report: Leinster Rumoured To Be Signing Explosive French Tight Head

This morning it was announced that Leinster have been linked with signing tight-head Rabah Slimani, ahead of the 2024-25 season. The 34-year-old has been capped 57 times for the French national team and would be a valuable addition to the squad ahead of Micheal Ala'alatoa's departure from the club at the end of the season.

Slimani has played in the Top 14 since 2008, breaking through with Stade Francais, before moving to Clermont in 2017 and has continued to be a regular in the squad starting 24 of his 31 appearances for the club this year. He made his first appearance for the French national team in 2013 but hasn't been involved in their set up since the 2019 World Cup.

It was reported by Midi Olympique this morning that Slimani, who's contract ends at ASM Clermont at the end of the season, had been approached by the four-time European Champions to replace Ala'alatoa who, is making the move to Clermont.

With just Thomas Clarkson and Paddy McCarthy as back up to Tadhg Furlong, Leinster look to strengthen their depth at tight head. The offer to Slimani is the second known attempt at replacing Ala'alatoa, with the club attempting to land the signature of Wallaby star Taniela Tupou back in March.

Provinces unhappy with Slimani rumours

With other French sides showing interest in the Parisian prop, Leinster are the favourites to receive his signature. Accepting the offer would make Slimani the first French man to represent the province.

However, the rumours have drawn a considerable amount of backlash from critical Munster and Ulster fans onside. They say their clubs haven't been allowed to sign non-Irish qualified props of a similar age profile because it might hinder academy player development.

No matter how you look at it Leinster will be a force to be reckoned with next season. Considering what Jordie Barrett and RG Snyman might bring to the club, adding in Slimani's experience at scrum time, Leinster will be hoping that squad depth will be a factor in claiming European success next season.
