It's been a turbulent few weeks in the England rugby camp with Aled Walters and Tom Tombleson both leaving their roles as part of the coaching staff with Walters becoming head of athletic performance with the Ireland men's team.

And now, former Ireland international Felix Jones has reportedly quit as defensive coach raising question marks as to what is going on within the camp. After joining the English set-up on the back of being a part of Rassie Erasmus's successful coaching team for the World Cup victories in 2019 and 2023, it was reported by Peter O'Reilly in The Sunday Times that Jones was unhappy with an 'unstable working environment.'

Jones had initially worked with Erasmus who was the director of rugby in Munster as he began his coaching career with the province during the 2016/17 season, yet where one door closes, another opens and what slipped from Jones’s grasp during his time as a player he has more than grabbed as a coach.

His arrival in Steve Borthwick’s camp was therefore greeted with real excitement and today's announcement comes largely out of the blue after less than a year in the role.

Jones playing career

Jones won 13 caps for Ireland and was selected for the 2011 Rugby World Cup warm-ups, however, an ankle ligament injury sustained in an awkward fall against France dashed Jones's hopes of playing at the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, as the injury ruled him out for the duration of the tournament.

The former full-back made 90 appearances for Munster during his injury ridden career and scored 50 points but was forced to retire in August 2015 at the age of just 28 due to a bad neck injury.

However, the Dubliner seems to have found his calling in coaching and we're looking forward to seeing where the next chapter may lead him to.
