There was some excellent news in Irish rugby circles this morning, with it being announced that Peter O'Mahony had signed a new one-year contract with Munster and the IRFU.
There had been some speculation about the future of the 34-year old in recent months, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season. It had been suggested that he could retire from international rugby, with a move to play his club rugby abroad also on the table.

Rugby: Peter O'Mahony shares heartfelt message after signing new contract
Peter O'Mahony has been the heartbeat of both Munster and Ireland for well over a decade, so it is brilliant to see that he will continue to play his rugby in this country for the foreseeable future.
Taking to Instagram after the news was announced, he summed up what it meant to him to continue to play for the teams that were so special to him.

After plenty of thought I’m delighted to have the opportunity to sign on for 1 more year with Munster and the IRFU.It’s been a decision I’ve had to make with my coaches and more importantly my family and I feel it’s the right thing for me to do. I feel there’s more left in me to give.
It’s not everyday a young man who grows following two teams, where he was brought up and shaped by, gets the chance to play for both as long as I have and to be given the opportunity to play for another year isn’t an opportunity I could turn down.
All I have ever tried to do is my best for my province and country and that’s what I’ll continue to do over the remainder of this season and next. Who knows what lies ahead, but I’ve had nothing but great years and I will endeavour to make this last chapter of my playing career the best of all.
It remains to be seen what this means for his international future, although this deal paves the way for Peter O'Mahony to continue his Ireland career should he choose to do so.
Considering the upheaval that is set to come in Munster over the coming months, it is encouraging to see that the Cork man will be sticking around for next season.
