Pat Lam shocked Irish rugby for the second time in a year this week, announcing he is leaving the side he guided to the most improbable of Pro 12 triumphs. Bristol will be his destination: somewhat surprising, given that they are likely to be relegated this season.
Lam and Connacht held a press conference at the Sportsgrounds today, to explain in more detail why he had taken the decision to leave the province he had signed a three-year contract extension with in January of last year.
He was both eloquent and emotional, explaining that the amount of money on offer - believed to be between £500,000 and £700,000 a year - was too good to turn down, as it would secure his family's future. This, he says, was something he thought about in more depth following the untimely death of his friend Anthony Foley.
