During the summer of 2012, Wallace was relaxing on his holiday in Portugal, having been entirely unmolested by the presence of both flying rugby balls and Kiwi tanks disguised as regular human beings for the previous month. Sadly, and somewhat inhumanely, he was forced to cut this foreign holiday short after Declan Kidney called him up to play in the third test against New Zealand in Hamilton.
The game went well and the selection gamble paid off as Ireland proceeded to lose 60-0.
