Renowned Irish rugby villain Tana Umaga is close to taking over as the head coach of the Auckland Blues. Umaga captained the All Black as a player, and the former Waikato centre is of course chiefly remembered upon these isles for his role in the spear tackle perpetrated upon Brian O'Driscoll.

Umaga is now close to being appointed the Head Coach of the Blues on a three year deal. Umaga has previously coached Toulon, in a loose player-coach capacity in 2008/09, and he subsequently served as backs coach under Philippe Saint-André in 2009/10.

Umaga has a difficult job on his hands, the Blues have endured a hideous 2015 season, winning just three of their 15 games.
