It's about time we had some positive news in Irish rugby, and the IRFU may have just provided it.
According to the Irish Examiner, the IRFU are pushing to try and bring Paul O'Connell into a coaching role within the union. Apparently, conversations have already taken place between O'Connell and the union, but apparently they aren't the only ones interested in the Limerick man's coaching services.
The Examiner mentions that O'Connell's move to Toulon might not be completely off - as there is a possibility that the Irish legend joins the French team as a member of the backroom staff. That is something that the IRFU would also encourage, and they would view that as a long term positive.
IRFU CEO Philip Browne confirmed that they are very interested in bringing O'Connell back into Irish rugby:
In many respects, Paul has been coaching for years with forwards and the line-out, so of course we’d be foolish not to be talking to him.
It’s a matter for Paul, when he’s ready, when he feels he wants to take something on like that. He knows we are here.
That should fill the Paul O'Connell shaped hole in the Irish team nicely.
