Thierry Dusautoir announced his retirement from international rugby on Friday.
The 80-cap backrow made the decision following talks with new France head coach Guy Noves. The 34-year-old, who was appointed France captain in 2009, played his last game for his country in the World Cup quarter-final thrashing against New Zealand.
According to Midi Olympique, Noves has already made a decision on who will replace Dusautoir as captain for the Six Nations.
Toulon's Guilhem Guirado is the choice. The 29-year-old hooker has been capped 38 times by France.
He is not assured of continuing in the role beyond an initial assessment period of the Six Nations.
Second row Yoann Maestri - who Noves worked with for six years at Toulouse - was the other main name in contention for the job.
