Munster's United Rugby Championship season opener against Cardiff has had to be postponed due to King Charles's first visit to Wales as King. The game was scheduled to be played at 7:35pm this Friday, September 16th but has now been pushed back to this Saturday at 3:05pm.

Season opener postponed due to King's Visit

Due to the new king's visit to the Welsh capital as part of an accession tour, BBC Wales has decided to focus most of its broadcasting resources to the king's arrival, meaning that it had not enough to broadcast the game. Therefore, the match had to be pushed back.

The URC have confirmed the postponement in a statement.

Broadcast facilities for both the host broadcaster (BBC Wales) and other TV facilities providers will be engaged in the coverage of the visit and the drain on available resources has resulted in the rescheduling of the game.

"The BKT United Rugby Championship would like to thank both Cardiff Rugby and Munster for their understanding in this matter which has occurred under very unique circumstances. It is also appreciated that BBC Wales made every effort to keep the fixture in its original date and time slot.

"The Cardiff Rugby v Munster will be broadcast live on BBC Wales, RTÉ 2, Premier Sport, SuperSport and URC.tv.

This game is the latest in a long list of postponements of sports events following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. This weekend saw no Premier League games be played which was criticized by a number of pundits due to the already condensed schedule.

It is yet to be confirmed if next weekend's games will be affected with concerns over games in the English capital due to policing shortages as the Queen's funeral has been confirmed for Monday, the 19th of September.
