It's been a dark few years for rugby game fans, as honestly the last really enjoyable rugby game was EA Sports Rugby 08.
Rugby 15 tried, and failed, to capture the hearts of rugby fans, but the game just had too many basic errors to be taken seriously. The same can be said for Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge, as it seems that nobody can quite get it right when it comes to bringing the sport of rugby to today's games consoles.
Well, now we have a new contender, from a very unexpected source...
Nintendo announced at E3 that they would be releasing 'Mario & Sonic At The Rio 2016 Olympic Games' later this year, and it will have Rugby 7's as a playable Olympic event.
Here's the trailer:
And here's a gif of the rugby section for closer inspection:
Ok, so it's not going to fill the void that Rugby 08 left in all of our heart, but hey, it looks like a laugh. Why would you have Knucles as a jumper in a lineout though? Surely he would be best suited to the back line.
The funny thing is, as it's Nintendo you can bet your house that it will be far more playable than any recent effort in the rugby game genre, and at the very least it will be great craic after a few pints.
The game will be released for Nintendo Wii U and 3DS later this year.
