As It Happened: Ireland Fall To Defeat In Six Nations Opener

The day has finally arrived! Ireland will begin their Guinness Six Nations defence this afternoon, as England roll into the Aviva Stadium. Joe Schmidt's side enter the game as favourites, looking to extend their unbeaten run in the competition. Eddie Jones will no doubt be looking to spoil the mood in the Aviva Stadium, however, and you can follow all of the action from this intriguing battle on our Ireland vs England liveblog.

Schmidt sprang somewhat of a selection surprise for this game, naming Robbie Henshaw to start at fullback. Rob Kearney has failed to prove he is back to full fitness after his recent injury lay-off, and it will be the Leinster centre that will take his place in the team.

Henshaw has played some '15' earlier in his career at Connacht, but has operated exclusively in the centre for the past few years. With strong form currently being displayed by Garry Ringrose and Bundee Aki, this selection allows Schmidt to fit all three in the starting XV.

Meanwhile, Manu Tuilagi will make his first start for England in four years, as they attempt to use the power game to halt this rising Irish side. He will be partnered in the centre by Henry Slade, with captain Owen Farrell lining up at fly half.

Ireland have defeated England in their last two meetings, both of which were Grand Slam deciders. In 2017 Ireland came out on top of a scoreline of 13-9, stopping the visitors from winning back-to-back Grand Slams.

Last year Ireland would claim a Grand Slam of their own, putting on an entirely convincing performance to secure a historic win at Twickenham. Joe Schmidt will be hoping that Ireland can replicate that performance today, in what is sure to be a bruising and tense encounter.
