The dust has settled on the Lions tour of New Zealand, and despite the lack of closure in terms of the series result, it will be remembered as one of the most enjoyable tours of the professional era.

The main reason for that is the standard of rugby which managed to engage even casual rugby fans and those who dislike the idea of the Lions in general, as we were treated to three excellent test matches that featured some jaw-dropping moments of skill.

Perhaps the best moment, although we may be biased, was that Sean O'Brien try in the first test, where the Lions took the ball all of 90 metres in a flowing move that culminated in the Leinster flanker touching down in the corner.

It truly was a special moment, and while it will forever be attributed to O'Brien, there's no doubting the role that Liam Williams played in making it happen.

The Welshman was operating at full back for all three test matches, and in an interesting interview with Wales Online ahead of his move to Saracens, Williams admitted that he never wanted the ball in the first place, and that if the instructions he gave to Anthony Watson had been followed the Lions would have happily surrendered possession to relieve the pressure.

I had been calling [for Anthony Watson] to smack it long.

When the ball came to me I shaped as if to kick but just felt I could step Kieran Read as he was running so fast and after that it was just about trying to make ground.

All I could hear were screams advising me what to do.

Once I was past Read, I thought I’d have a go and everything then fell into place.

Foxy [Jonathan Davies] and Elliot were brilliant down the left and Sean did superbly to keep up with play and claim the score.

It really was a magnificent try, one that will live long in the memory, and Williams is doing himself a disservice by playing it down in the manner he did. His step on Read was outstanding, and the decisions he made in the moments following it were 100% correct.

Williams will be playing for Saracens in the Aviva Premiership next season, but he reckons his old club Scarlets are going to get on just fine in the PRO 14 without him.

Especially if the reported deal for Leigh Halfpenny is confirmed in the near future.

I think they will go from strength to strength.

They have a hell of a backline, with the likes of Foxy and Steff Evans, and if Leigh Halfpenny joins that will help things again.

It is hard to achieve back-to-back titles, but there is no reason why they can’t have a real crack this year. They have excellent players and coaches.
