Writing in his column in The Rugby Paper, Shane Williams revealed that Justin Tipuric briefly lost his vision having sustained a concussion in this year's Six Nations against Italy. Williams spoke to Tipuric a week after the incident in March, where the back-rower revealed the side-effects of the injury which forced him to miss Wales' Summer tour of New Zealand:
He said he briefly lost his sight at the hospital, which is just frightening.
Tipuric sustained the injury in the 2016 Six Nations clash with Italy, and was given a three-month layoff as a result. He is fit and raring to go now, however, as he recalled to Wales Online last week:
I’m feeling healthy and enjoying pre-season as best as it’s possible to.
I was well looked after, with excellent support from both the Ospreys and the Union medical teams. My welfare was put first, in front of everything else, and that’s important. I’m extremely grateful to everybody for that.
It wasn’t the nicest of injuries shall we say. It was a pretty difficult time for me, sitting in the house unable to do anything for about five weeks. I’m not a good patient at the best of times. It’s nice to be able to get out and do stuff again instead of sitting, staring at walls.
While it is encouraging to see Tipuric back in action, the idea of losing sight in hospital - some time after having sustained the injury - is terrifying.
