I'm not entirely sure anyone would have thought this before 18.00 o'clock Saturday, but I think Sexton is now in pole position to assume the Irish captaincy beyond O'Driscoll, O'Connell et al. Consider it: the next Ireland captain will have to be a Leinster player given the diverging fortunes and futures of the two clubs. After Saturday, he clearly has the most established leadership credentials of any of his Leinster contemporaries. Heaslip is obviously a totemic force, but I'm not entirely sure he's ideal for the captaincy. No other contenders come to mind. Obviously, Sexton has some maturing to do, as Brian O'Driscoll did. But for now, the job seems to be his. Disagree with us in the comment section if you like.
