The IRFU have announced a big change to the current Ireland jerseys, ahead of their World Cup warm-up clash with Italy at the Aviva Stadium this Saturday [kick-off: 8pm].
It has been revealed that for the first time in their history, Ireland will wear the names of players on the back of their jerseys.
The IRFU did not say how long this change will be implemented for, but they will be in place for at least the remainder of the Bank of Ireland Nations Series/World Cup warm-up games.
These also include Ireland's clash with England on August 19, and their game in Bayonne against Samoa on August 26.
England, Scotland, and Italy have recently used names on the backs of jerseys, while Wales announced last week that they would be implementing the change for their own warm-up fixtures.

Among other reasons, I like this for the fact that it dismisses the idea that ‘the jersey doesn’t belong to me’ or ‘I’m just minding it,’ etc.
Feck that. If you’ve worked hard enough to be selected to play for your country, it should be yours until someone takes it off you. https://t.co/xrtNoHwW3l

This is a good, positive thing for the game and the more casual viewer. https://t.co/E3ykNA582U

Names and no sponsor.

An excellent idea, even just to weed out those who believe players are merely "custodians" of the jersey. https://t.co/INMuTb8RIk

Jessica Long, the IRFU Head of Commercial, said of the new jerseys:
“As we count down towards the opening game of the Bank of Ireland Nations Series this Saturday, we’re excited to announce that players’ names will be on our new Canterbury match kit for the first time during this Series.
"We hope this will help further engage new audiences by increasing player recognition.”
Despite the many positive reactions to the move, the new jerseys do have their detractors.
This looks so shit. https://t.co/IyOlxxtXwC
