Far be it from us to criticise someone for being negative or cynical, but we're pretty bored with the hate train encircling the Irish rugby. Anyone following the downward trajectory of the Ireland rugby team since the 2009 Grand Slam will have been harboring severely lowered expectations to this circus in New Zealand. It seems like our collective attitude should be 'one last ride into the sunset with this brilliant generation of players.' That seems to be the attitude of the players themselves, who seem mostly concerned with enjoying themselves. But lead by Ireland's rugby doofuses, there has been an almighty chorus of hating spreading from Ireland en route to New Zealand. Just check out the antipathy in the comments section of the RTE story on Kidney's selection for Australia.
Would we prefer if Kidney was less conservative? Of course. Would it be better if we had more depth at key positions? Certainly. Does Trimble deserve a game at this stage? Absolutely. Will we lose to Australia? Most likely. But as Fianna Fail might say, we are where we are. The best we can do is try to enjoy it and move on. Forget the selection issues. Look at the macro. You cannot reverse the hands of time.
