Some positive news has come out of the Ireland camp today regarding Paul O'Connell, after he departed the team's base in Newport to undergo surgery on his injured hamstring in London.
Many were hoping that although obviously O'Connell could no longer make an impact on the field, the squad would still benefit from his presence in the dressing room, and thankfully that now appears to be the case as Ireland team manager Michael Kearney said that they are expecting O'Connell to be back in time for Sunday's clash with Argentina.
Paul came back into camp on Monday, and spent the first couple of days in camp. He was in good form, and was contributing at the meetings.
He left this morning for London where he’s having an operation later today and we’re hoping that Paul will rejoin us in Cardiff either tomorrow evening or Saturday.
That is bound to be a big boost to the Ireland players, while they would obviously rather have Paul O'Connell alongside them on the pitch, the outpouring of affection that we saw on social media following the news that his playing days for Ireland were over shows how much they truly value having him around.
It's also good news for Ireland fans, because we know that if the lads aren't producing the goods on Sunday, Paulie will be there to have a word.
