At this early point of the 2024 Six Nations, it could be argued that France are the biggest story of the championship so far. Having looked largely imperious over the last couple of years, their form over the first two games has been abysmal.

Not only did they suffer a heavy defeat to Ireland in their opener, but you could make the case that they played even worse during their victory over Scotland at the weekend. They were outplayed by the Scots throughout and needed a questionable last gasp refereeing decision to get over the line.

It certainly seems as though the team are still suffering from a hangover on the back of their disappointing World Cup campaign, with head coach Fabien Galthié now coming under some pressure within the country.

Fabien Galthié has been lauded for the job he has done with France over the last few years, although the disappointing results since the World Cup have led to some criticism.

He said after the Scotland game that he was pleased by his team's performance, with those comments now coming under fire.

Speaking to RMC Sport, former France scrum-half Pierre Berbizier suggested that Galthié was insulting the French rugby public with his remarks.

Out of respect for this Scottish team, this ironic tone bothers me a little. I have the impression that he was making fun of the journalists present, but by making fun of the journalists, he is making fun of us, of the public.

It was not the time to make humour, if it was meant to be humour, given the scenario of the match, given the match against Ireland which followed the South Africa match. I was more expecting a low profile on his part...

The numbers, we can make them say what we want. We relied on good numbers, but in four years, we have won one tournament.

That is not enough in my opinion, content must be approached differently. Our potential is enormous.

There had been few suggestions that Fabien Galthié was under any sort of pressure in his role prior to the Six Nations, although a few more bad performances in this competition could see that dynamic quickly shift.

It does seem as though the narrative surrounding the team has changed on the back of that loss to Ireland.
