It is always interesting to see what career moves rugby players make after they finish up on the pitch. While many of them go down the routes you would expect in the form of coaching or punditry, others opt to move away from the game altogether.
A quick look at the Ireland Six Nations team from 2008 will give you a good glimpse of that. While some are still involved in rugby, others have had successful roles in the likes of PR, farming, and broadcasting.
In saying that, this is one certainly one of the more left field career moves we have seen from a former rugby player.
David Humphreys set for top job in English cricket
David Humphreys earned 72 caps for Ireland 1996-2008, also having a hugely successful career with Ulster.
Since retiring, he has largely stayed within rugby circles. Humphreys was appointed as operations director at Ulster after hanging up his boots, going on to become the director of rugby. He would go on to fill that role at Gloucester from 2014-2020, before a brief spell having a brief performance consultant role with the Georgian national team in 2020.
The Antrim native would go on to set up sports recruitment company SportsWork in 2021.
Now he is set to venture into an unfamiliar code.
The Telegraph are reporting that David Humphreys is set to be appointed as the new director of cricket at the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
The position would see the former rugby star take responsibility for central contracts for the biggest stars in English cricket, as well other duties such as touring operations for both the men's and women's teams.
This move has come as a massive surprise, with the 51-year old having never previously been involved in cricket.
The sport is in a rather delicate position at the moment. The top players are asking for bigger contracts, with the Indian Super League massively increasing salaries within the sport and thus the expectations of star names.
Humphreys was heavily involved in contract negotiations during his time at both Ulster and Gloucester, meaning he should be well positioned to make the adjustment to a new sport.
It is certainly an interesting move.
