South African referee Craig Joubert was embroiled in a controversy last night. The former World Cup final referee was heavily criticised for his performance in the dramatic World Cup quarter-final against Scotland and Australia.
Joubert's decision to award Australia a last minute penalty that Bernard Foley converted to win the game was the subject of most of the Scotland frustration. Scotland were adamant that the ball came back off an Australian and was therefore free to play, instead of the offside call that Joubert awarded.
World Rugby have issued a statement, and they have thrown Joubert under the bus:
BREAKING: World Rugby say referee Craig Joubert's decision to award Australia last minute penalty against Scotland was incorrect. #SSNHQ

World Rugby believe that the correct decision was to award a scrum to Australia for the original knock on from Scotland, and not to award a penalty.
There was a heated debate on ITV over the incident, which takes away from an amazing test match.
