A year is a long time in Irish rugby. This time last year, Rory Best was captaining Ireland after an injury to captain Paul O'Connell who was captaining in the absence of Brian O'Driscoll. This time last year, Hugh Farrelly was covering the Ireland team for the Irish Independent. Flash forward a year and Jamie Heaslip is the captain and Conor George is covering the Ireland team for the Indo. George previously covered rugby for the Echo in Cork, a less prominent position where he felt comfortable expressing strong personal opinions on many things on Twitter, such as the Irish Independent. People have been digging deeper tonight into his Twitter archive and found an interesting exchange from the 6th of March, 2012, a Tuesday, where following an injury to O'Connell and a knock to Best's ribs, it was uncertain who would captain Ireland. George clearly sensed that Ireland #8 Jamie Heaslip was seen by some as a captain in the making, though it's clear that Heaslip wouldn't have been George's first choice for the role.
