When Ireland's greatest ever player retired from rugby, there was a sense or an expectation that he would follow in Ronan O'Gara's footsteps into coaching.
O'Gara is one of a number of young Irish ex-players who have been making waves in the coaching world along with Bernard Jackman, Jeremy Davidson, and Conor O'Shea.
Is O'Driscoll tempted to join them and get into coaching?
For the time being, the coaching side of things doesn’t really do it for me because I wanted my weekends back.
Speaking at the websummit, O'Driscoll preached the preference for having a nice weekend off for the first time in 17 years over giving up his Saturday's to coach rugby. Just wait until young Billy needs a coach at U-8's.
From a team point of view, I wanted a clean break away from it. Working on the Champions Cup allows me to still have a huge interest in the game and impart the little bit of knowledge I hope I still have.
O'Driscoll has made waves as a pundit for BT Sport for the Champions Cup, and for ITV during the World Cup. He's joined O'Gara and Shane Horgan as recently retired players who are giving a fresh perspective to analysis, and O'Driscoll says he is happy with just that.
The Leinster and Ireland great was heavily involved in mentoring Robbie Henshaw for the last year of his career, and did acknowledge that that was something that appealed to him:
But I like doing a little bit of the one-on-one stuff with guys who are interested in what I have to say, and I’ll pull apart their game a little bit; I’m only too happy to help.
If only there was a young Irish centre that could use some advice?
