Leinster's need to replace the departing Zane Kirchner has turned their heads towards Adam Ashley-Cooper.
Kirchner will leave Leinster this summer after four years at the province.
Leinster were previously linked with a move for All Black winger Israel Dagg but the 28-year-old signed a fresh deal with New Zealand Rugby earlier this week. The province had reportedly met with Dagg while he was in Dublin with the All Blacks in November.
That avenue being closed means Leinster are now eyeing up Ashley-Cooper according to the Irish Independent's David Kelly.
The 116-cap Australian international will leave Top 14 side Bordeaux Begles at the end of the season after not being offered a new contract.
Bordeaux president Laurent Marti told Midi Olympique that his side are looking for players who offer 'more power' than the 32-year-old.
We want more power and we're looking for these type of players. Because our Top 14 favours the teams who have the penetrative force.
Ashley-Cooper told AFP of his disappointment regarding the decision.
A few days ago they told me my contract would not be extended, which is a shame.
Sports-wise and family-wise we love it in Bordeaux and love living in France. I'll have to give it [what to do next] some thought.
Ashley-Cooper, who joined Bordeaux following the World Cup, would be a versatile option for Leinster. He play at fullback, on the wing or at centre.
Earlier this month, he was linked with a move to Japanese side Kintetsu by the Australian media and London Irish by Midi Olympique.
