Super Rugby regularly tosses up some of the most neutral friendly and exciting rugby compared to some of the more tension filled tussles elsewhere. Most of the time, those games feature New Zealand teams, but the best rugby game of 2015 so far was a South African derby played yesterday in Cape Town.
It featured eight fantastic shared equally between the teams before a crucial turnover on the Lions tryline in the last minute prevented the Cheetahs from snatching a late dramatic winner.
Much like the stereotype of Super Rugby games, the attacking is devastating, but it helps when the covering defenders are beaten so easily by a simple step. The commentators are right to get so excited after each try, despite the fact that it's written into their job description to do that anyway.
The Lions impressive season continues as they move ahead of last season's runners up the Crusaders into 8th, just two points off the playoff spots. Such is their form that unheralded players such as Lionel Mapoe, Warrick Tecklenburg, Jaco Kriel, and Ruan Combrinck could be in line for a call up to the Springboks.
By contrast, the Cheetahs continue to struggle. They retained their attacking adventure without Springbok sensation Willie le Roux, but Joe Pietersen's highlights in the video below sum up their problems - devastating in attack, but almost invisible as the last defender.
