Ulster Rugby have announced the retirement of 22-year-old Academy player George Saunderson with immediate effect, citing 'medical advice' following 'concussions sustained this season'. A prop in the Ulster Rugby Academy, Saunderson's potential was spotted as early as 2021 when he was selected for Ireland's U20s Six Nations squad, where he featured three times, scoring a try against Italy.

Saunderson's premature retirement will no doubt continue to spark the debate in Rugby Union at the moment regarding player safety and concussion protocols. At just 22 years of age, Saunderson being forced to retire following 'medical advice' is concerning for the sport.

22-Year-Old Ulster Rugby Prodigy Forced To Retire Following 'Medical Advice'

In a press-release issued by Ulster Rugby this morning, the province announced the immediate retirement of Academy player George Saunderson "on medical advice". The statement continued, "Following concussions sustained this season, the talented forward has been advised that he should retire from rugby."

The 22-year-old said it was "a tough decision to make", but that it was best for his "long-term health." In his statement, Saunderson said:

"Representing Ireland at the U20 Six Nations was a proud moment for me and I’ll cherish those memories", whilst he wished to thank his teammates, coaches and the staff who helped him develop through the years, as well as his parents and family.

"I wish everyone at Ulster well for the future, and will be cheering the guys on in the years to come.”

Ulster Rugby Academy Manager Gavin Hogg said he was sad to see Saunderson's playing career coming to an end, and commented on his qualities that will be missed at the club.

“Over the past three years in the Academy, we have witnessed George mature into a self-driven and motivated person who has displayed great leadership skills. We have no doubt these traits will transfer into future endeavours, leading to success with whatever he chooses to do in life."

Hogg believes that Saunderson "had the potential to make in impact in the Senior Men's side in the future", and is disappointed that the Ulster prop will not be able to avail of his evident potential.

The news is a blow for Ulster Rugby, who will be without a bright young talent after what has been a mixed season from the Ulstermen. New Head Coach Richie Murphy has a clear vision for the future of the club, focussing on youth development, making Saunderson's retirement even more bad news.
