It's looking ever more likely that Dele Alli will be joining Besiktas  from Everton, after just eight months at the club. If somebody told you this five years ago, chances are you wouldn't have believed it, but sadly for the English man, his career has taken a dramatic, downward spiral.

Back in 2015-16, after Dele's first season in the Premier League, he was awarded PFA Young Player of the Year. Alli scored 10 times and assisted a further 9 during his breakthrough year.

The following year he was again given the prestigious award after another great season at White Hart Lane.

Since then, it's safe to say things haven't worked out for Dele Alli and in January, he completed a permanent transfer to Everton.

Back in his Spurs days, Alli was coached by Jose Mourinho when 'All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur' was being aired.

Mourinho on Dele Alli

There was a famous clip of Mourinho pulling the England international into his office for a chat about his performance levels, and as time has gone by, Mourinho's worries for Alli have certainly come through.

Jose Mourinho said:

"What I want to tell you basically is this. I think you feel I like you. I like you as a player and I like you as a kid, I think you are a nice kid. I don't want to be your father because you have your father, I don't want to be your uncle or your old brother, I just want to be your coach but with a good connection.

"So I have to tell you always what I think. Inside of you, maybe you tell me to fu*k off, but I have to tell you exactly what I think. For me, since the beginning, I have no doubts about your potential. I saw you do incredible matches, incredible things, but I always felt you have ups and downs. There is a huge difference between a player that keeps consistency and a player that has moments. And that is what makes the difference between a top, top player and a player with top potential."

"It's something that you don't have to share with me, just for you to analyse yourself and to realise why, 'my career is being okay, MK Dons, Tottenham, national team bang and then you reach the top and then why in your career you have these little ups and downs"

Mourinho then goes on to speak about Dele Alli's personal life and the regret he could have some day "one period you are an amazing professional, another period you are a party boy."

Mourinho adds:

"I am 56 now and yesterday, yesterday I was 20 and today I am 56. Time flies and I think one day, I think you will regret if you don't reach what you can reach. I'm not expecting you to be the man of the match every game, I'm not expecting you to score goals every game. I just want to tell that I think you will regret. You should demand more from you."

Looking back, 'The Special One' was correct about Dele Alli who once had so much potential, and even though he is still only 26-years-old, the former PFA Young Player of the Year looks to have reached an all time low in his career.
