An Irishman has caused the upset of all upsets at the 2018 Dutch Darts Championship. William O'Connor, taking on the indomitable top-seed and World #1 Michael van Gerwen, overcame the two-time World Champion to reach the last-16 this evening.
🇮🇪 O'CONNOR THRASHES MVG! 🇮🇪
An astonishing scoreline in Maastricht as William O'Connor pulls off a 6-1 demolition of top seed Michael van Gerwen to reach the Last 16! 👏 #DDC18 pic.twitter.com/IezAR1YCuY— Live Darts (@livedarts) September 8, 2018
The odds-on favourite to win his home tournament, van Gerwen went down 6-1 to O'Connor.
Speaking afterward, the Limerick man couldn't quite grasp the extent of what he had just done; "I really don't know what to say, I'm so proud of myself. I had the undo-able task and I've done it."
Needless to say, there was a sense of overwhelming surprise and praise for the Irishman in light of his outstanding achievement.
Outstanding performance from Willie O’Connor 🇮🇪🎯#DDC18
