Sunday night saw an absolute classic in the darts as Michael van Gerwen defeated Raymond van Barneveld to reach the world championship final in what has been described as the best performance ever in a world championship match.
It was one of those games where people who don't watch darts regularly wonder why the hell they don't watch darts regularly, as 29 maximums were hit and MVG set a tournament-record three-dart average of 114.05.
The final score was 6-2, and van Gerwen was agonisingly close to a nine-dart finish, before hitting double 18 to seal the deal.
IMPECCABLE ?
MVG reaches the World Championship final by smashing the record for the highest average with 114.05! https://t.co/ZbkqTP9Yaw— Sky Sports Darts ? (@SkySportsDarts) January 1, 2017
Raymond van Barneveld was in the contest until van Gerwen kicked into overdrive, and speaking after the match, he gave an absolutely heartbreaking interview to Sky Sports.
Barney had promised his grandson that he would return as the champion, and the realisation that he would not be able to fulfill that promise was moving, before the Dutchman explained that he was considering retirement at some point in the near future.
But the show must go on, and we are now set up for an incredible final between reigning world champion Gary Anderson and world number on Michael van Gerwen.
Bring it on. Coverage starts at 8pm on Sky Sports 1.
