13-year-old Nicole Turner is through to the 50m freestyle final at the Paralympic Swimming World Championships. It's her fourth final is many days to continue her impressive debut year.
The Laois native recorded an all-time personal best of 36.81 seconds in her opening heat this morning to finish fourth and qualify for tonight's final as sixth fastest.
Dubliner Ailbhe Kelly is also making her World Championship debut and produced a lifetime best of 1:20.44 in the S8 Women’s 100m Freestyle, but unfortunately didn't make the final with seventh place finish in her heat, and twelfth overall. She will compete in her main event on Saturday in the the 100m Backstroke.
London and Beijing Paralympians Ellen Keane and Darragh McDonald also achieved season-bests in their respective 50m Freestyle heats. Darragh, who won bronze in the 400m Freestyle on day one, finished fifth in his heat and 9th overall, Ellen finished eight in her heat and 15th overall.
Darragh will conclude his championships with the 100m Freestyle on Sunday, while Ellen will compete in her second best event the 100m Butterfly tomorrow.
James McGovern will compete in his first appearance in these championships tomorrow in his leading event the 400m Freestyle while James Scully will also be competing.
The champions are vital for qualification to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, as those who finish first and second will earn automatic spots for their countries. Further Paralympians will qualify with highest placed finishes and world ranking will also have a factor.
