Gary and Paul O'Donovan finished a disappointing fourth in the final of the lightweight men's double sculls at the World Rowing Cup in Belgrade on Sunday morning.
The Skibbereen pair had been expected to battle it out with Great Britain's Will Fletcher and Peter Chambers for the top prize. The British duo would take gold after building up an early lead. Though, they were nearly caught by the Czechs and Poles in a dramatic finish.
Ireland's Olympic silver medalists found themselves behind at the 500m mark. Usually slow starters, it was not seen as as problem for the brothers. This time, however, they were unable to reel in the leaders.
Earlier this morning, the O'Donovans' fellow Skibbereen rowers Shane O'Driscoll and Mark O'Donovan took gold in the final of the lightweight men's pair. Denise Walsh, also rowing out of Skibbereen, took silver in the lightweight women's single sculls.
