Day One of the Mosconi Cup - pool's equivalent of the Ryder Cup - took place on Monday with Europe finishing the five matches with a 4-1 lead over the US.
The third match of the day was between American veteran Dennis Hatch and European rookie Joshua Filler. 20-year-old Filler was playing in his first ever singles game of the competition.
The young German, who his captain Marcus Chamat said afterwards has the talent and ability to be the 'Ronnie O'Sullivan of pool', ended up beating Hatch 5-4 to give Europe a 3-0 lead at the time.
The defeat was not taken well by the American, who refused to shake the hand of an opponent 26 years his junior. Immediately after Filler sank the nine ball, Hatch walked away from the table. Even when Filler approached Hatch, the American refused to acknowledge him.
Boos rang out at the Mandalay Bay venue in Las Vegas in reaction to Hatch's behaviour.
USA team captain Johan Ruijsink said that the incident had already been addressed and that it will not happen again. He did also defend his player's behaviour.
It's not like he's winning the Mosconi Cup. He's won his first match, okay, that's good. He goes to his partners and that's okay but he should have gone to Dennis and it took a long time. Then Marc [Chamat, European captain] had to drag him over and Dennis thought, 'Oh, if Mark has to drag you over then I'm not going to shake your hand.'
It's something that happens in the heat of the moment but it's good, it means that there's heat.
