For us mere mortals, the level of sporting excellence on show at the Olympics is often difficult to comprehend.

The games in Paris feature some of the best athletes on the planet, all of whom have dedicated their lives to succeeding in their respective sports. The result of that is a scarcely believable standard of competition, one that general members of the public could only ever dream of achieving.

While all of that is incredibly enjoyable to watch, it is also nice to be given a reminder every once in a while that these athletes are indeed human.

There was one such example in the women's 3m springboard diving competition earlier today.

Diving is one of the sports at the Olympics that your general sports fan finds difficult to understand, with the acrobatics on show in the various events something that seem almost impossible to pull off.

In saying that, one Mexican competitor produced an example of a more familiar type of dive in Paris earlier today.

Vazquez Montana would produce an absolutely awful dive during the women's 3m springboard semi-final earlier today, scoring zero for her effort in the fourth round of the competition. She would completely misjudge the dive and end up hitting the water back-first, making quite the splash in the process.

The dive would score a zero from the judges. However, Montana and the Mexican contingent would soon make a complaint, suggesting that she was put off by a noise from the crowd.

The judge would insist that the noise came well before the dive and had no impact on her effort on the board. As a result, the score would stand.

This dive would ultimately cost the Mexican diver a place in the final. Having been in eighth position prior to this round, she would ultimately end up in 16th position and fail to advance to the next round.
