The Olympics is a time where every sport gets highlighted. Over the next two weeks or so everything from the 100m sprint to skateboarding is going to have the eyes of the world on it and you never know what's going to happen.

The people weren't expecting one sight that was seen during the swimming that took place this morning.

As the participants, including Ireland's Mona McSharry lined up for their heat in the women's 100m breaststroke and were ready to set off, they were told to step back and next thing you see is a middle aged man in speedos jumping into the pool.

However, it wasn't swimming's version of a 'pitch invader' but one of the organisers who went in to retrieve a swimming cap that had sank to the bottom of the pool after the previous race.

Cameras caught the man receiving a big cheer from the crowd as he walked around the pool.

The race eventually took place and it was a good one for McSharry. The Sligo woman finished second in the heat to reach the semifinals, swimming in a time of 1:05.74, the second fastest time she has ever swam over the distance.

She was just 0.11 of a second off World Champion Qianting Tang of China and swam the third fastest time out of anyone in the heats.

Speaking to RTÉ afterwards Mona McSharry was happy with her performance and spoke about how she dealt with the unusual going ons before the race.

Yeah I'm excited, I think there's a little bit more in me based on that race. I think nerves got the better of me, I'm happy that's the time you know that's exciting but we just have to come back tonight. You know I'm in a semi and I deserve to be there and try get my place in the final.

It's about where I want to be, maybe just need to be a little bit more relaxed, a little bit more confident but other than that, I haven't looked at any splits or anything yet so based just off of feel.

Not really you kind of just have to take it that everyone's in the same boat and not let it bother you too much, jacket back on like everyone else, sit down and just be ready to go when they call you back up.

Everyone has had some sort of disruption before and you just have to not let it take over.

It's nice to have the first one out of the way, experience the crowd. I was a little bit nervous yesterday watching Ellen (Walshe) because it's very loud but honestly once you're down there in the zone you don't really hear as much.
