Kellie Harrington cut a jovial figure after she got her bid for a second Olympic gold medal up and running with a stunning performance in Paris.

The Dublin boxer had too much for opponent Alessia Mesiano of Italy, claiming a 5:0 unanimous decision win to move into the quarter-finals of the lightweight class.

A gold medallist in Tokyo three years ago, Harrington reflected on her latest win when she spoke to RTÉ.

Yeah this is what I love," Harrington said after her win.

"Before we go any further, I don't know who my next opponent is so don't tell me because I am waiting on the coaches to tell me.

"It was a fantastic fight. Alessia is a really smooth operator so it was great to get in there and to be able to take the win.

"What is there? Seven-and-a-half billion people in the world or something like that? I know back home I won't be passing too many double Olympians on my street so history is made."

Kenneth Egan 'loved' one aspect of Kellie Harrington interview

Kenneth Egan, who won silver when boxing for Ireland at the 2008 Olympics, was in studio for RTÉ and gave context to Harrington's performance.

However, he took particular joy from one aspect of her post-win interview, highlighting the fact she did not want to know who her next opponent was.

'I love what she said there - 'I don't want to know my next opponent, I'll talk to my coaches about that'," Egan said.

"She is so focused on the here and now, enjoying that win, taking it on board. They will go back and do a debrief, then they will look at the next fight in time. I like that.

"That's the most important thing. It's not about a journalist shouting 'you're in against such and such next'. They will go back to the room now and chill out, she will cool down and then they will say 'right, here's who we have next'.

"There will be a bit of analysis on her next opponent and they will make a plan from there on in.

"It is really mindful thinking It's day by day, fight by fight, round by round. I think that's very, very effective.

"Kellie in there today, it was flawless. When she's happy and relaxed, she makes things look easy because she's very good.

"This is not a two week gig, she is doing this all her life and putting it onto the table now."

An encouraging verdict from the former Olympian and it is safe to say Harrington sounded confident following her excellent showing.

She is just a win away from adding another Olympic medal to her collection in the French capital.
