Kellie Harrington's Olympic title defence marches on, with the Dubliner producing one of the best performances of her career to secure the victory over Brazil's Beatriz Ferreira in their semi-final bout in Paris this evening.

The Irishwoman entered the fight as the slight favourite, having overcome Ferreira in the final in Tokyo three years ago. However, the Brazilian was seeded above her and is renowned for her heavy hitting power. She had also stepped into the professional ranks and won a world title in recent times.

Once the bout got underway, it was clear that Harrington was the classier fighter.

She had the better of the opening round, picking off her opponent who relied heavily threw some wild shots with little success. The Irishwoman would lead 4-1 on the judge's scorecards at that point.

However, the second round was closer affair. Ferreira arguably had the better of the exchanges and took that one 3-2 on the scorecards.

If there was any doubt about the result of the fight, it quickly dissipated once the final round got underway. Kellie Harrington would provide an absolute masterclass in the third, ensuring that she would advance to an Olympic final.

She will now box for the gold medal on Tuesday, with a minimum reward of a silver already secured.

Emotional Kellie Harrington lost for words

This was yet another stellar performance from Kellie Harrington, who cut a confident figure both before and during the fight.

In saying that, there was an uncharacteristic outpouring of emotion after the outcome of the bout was confirmed. Normally the coolest of customers in the ring, the fighter battled back tears as the result was read out.

This continued in her post-fight interview, where speaking to Joe Stack of RTÉ, she had to gather herself before summing up what was a hugely special night.

I actually have no words for a change. I'm speechless. It's not often you'll get that. I just can't believe that. I just can't believe that happened again.

Harrington tried to explain how the fight was won, but was interrupted by a buoyant Irish crowd chanting Olés, When she finally did discuss the fight, she seemed surprised at her opponent's tactics.

I think she tried to outbox me... She's an incredible fighter. She's a world champion pro now.

As the interview went on, Harrington also had a message for her family and community back in the northeast inner city of Dublin.

As long as I get out of the ring and I'm happy, that's all that matters. It's only sport at the end of the day. It doesn't define me as a person. I'm still Kellie Harrington. Whether I win or I lose, I'm still going to go home to a great family and an absolutely brilliant community.

Kellie Harrington will now quickly turn her attention towards Tuesday's final, where she will face the top seed in the 60kg category, Yang Wenlu of China.

Judging by her recent performance, she would more than deserve such an accolade.
