A Clare woman has settled a court case after her leg was run over by a milk float previously seen in the Speed 3 episode of Father Ted, according to a report in the Irish Times this evening.
Geraldine Naughton from Ennis was pinned under the famous milk float after it drove up against the kerb of a roundabout and rolled painfully over her left leg.
Ms Naughton was taken "in great pain" to Ennis General Hospital where it was revealed that she had fractured the tip of her fibula and was placed in crutches for eight weeks. The float was being driven by a man in a priest's costume. It was part of a fund raising event for Down Syndrome Ireland.
The amount of money involved in the settlement was not disclosed.
The Irish Times, cognisant of the gravity of the case and the woman's injuries (as Brian Cowan might put it) eschewed any jokey references about the incident. It did not enquire, as many have been moved to, whether the milk float was going over or under 4 miles an hour at the time of the incident. Nor it did editorialise that "shit happens" at the close of the article. However, they did, rather harshly, dub Fr Dougal Maguire a "buffoon priest."
The milk float was originally driven by Pat Mustard before he was sacked for gross misconduct and he was replaced by Fr. Maguire.
