Without Cricket, What's Left For The Bandwagon-Jumping Irish Sport Fan?

While we're gutted that our cricketers no longer have a place at the elitist World Cup, spare a thought for the bandwagon-riding Irish sports fan this morning, who will have to shelve all of that recently-acquired cricket knowledge and discover a new pastime. Luckily, Balls.ie is operated as a public service information source, and we're here to provide help for anyone looking for a new 'outsider' sport.

As far as we can tell, any Irish bandwagon sport must answer in the affirmative to two of the following three questions:

  • Is it a sport that was invented in England?
  • Is it a sport that England is currently very good at, or preferably, best in the world at?
  • Is it a sport that we have a somewhat realistic chance of beating England at?

Sadly, most sports are immediately eliminated.  We can't even beat Luxembourg at Davis Cup tennis, for instance. There is one sport that England dominates that I feel we can compete in, though.

Rowing. While I don't think an English person invented the boat, there's something very English about four brandy-sipping, pipe-smoking chaps rowing a boat in unison. The World Rowing Championships are in the last week of August in Slovenia. Let's get behind the lads.
